I went to home, Estonia for a long weekend. To my grandmother's birthday (The crazy 90th), to see my friends and family and rest. And since it was my boyfriends first visit to Est, then I needed to show him a bit of my home country and where I come from.
Thanks to everyone who made our stay so nice. :) Very special thanks to Liisi (breakfast, accommodation and amazing company) and Andres (the ride).
Anyhow. What my French boyfriend learned was that:
a) Estonia is not really an Eastern European country. I had told him that about 100 times, but is the same if I told him that Alice in Wonderland was filmed in Est and this is what the country is like.
Yeah, what he learned was that Tallinn is no different than London, except for the size, architecture and spoken languages...and that isn't exactly true...They just don't speak that much Estonian here in London. And the variety of cultures appearing on the streets as we speak (I mean. An Asian, a black person, an European and an Indian standing in the same cue to get a coffee or sitting next to each other in public transportation)... In Est, there are not too many black skinned people...I don't know why, maybe it is because it is cold....who knows.
b) Everything is better during the summertime. I kept taking him to places I loved...and even me, I was a bit disappointed and many times I repeated that this is so cool and this is super nice, but....in the summer...:) Even my family. When they were trying so hard to speak in English and explain him some Estonian customs and recommending places to go and all that... when they suddenly stopped speaking and were looking their words...he had to finish their sentence by saying that "But it's better in summer?" ... :) So yes, when planning a trip to Est, it's better in the summer (April/May to September).
c) Estonian shot is 4cl not 2cl. Home made beer is tricky. It's easier to find what ever kind of food to Estonian cuisine.
d) All Estonian women are beautifuuuuuul - apparently it's a myth and it comes down just to me, sorry my Estonian ladies! :D
e) Public transportation is full of old people and the drivers are super rude.
f) Saaremaa is the best!
Other than that. Estonia for me was soooooo nice. I loved being home and being able to go to places...my places... and you know what - the first night, after a sunny day, it got a bit freezing and the air there.... it smelled so nice and fresh compared to London's super polluted air. And, it is so cool to know that after a long time away, you are still on a same page with your friends, except for few, but yes, it was as if I saw them the weekend before. :)
Also, as it turned out. My baby sister got married and I am sooooooooo happy for her and my new inlaw...Coolest news during my stay at home. Yet, I hate to point it out, but she got married before me. :D
Anyhow. The next time in Est will be this summer. I already can't wait to have my cereals with fresh wild strawberries and a morning coffee on our outside tiny garden in Saaremaa, sunbathing the same time... sooooo super nice. Going to pick chantarelles and swimming in Karujärv. Oh, yeah, that's the life....and barbecues and long warm summer nights, walks on a beach and near the castle... If I could I'd fast forward myself into June.... :) But, it's not that far from now...
xoxo
